The past few years have been astronomical for Billie Eilish. With her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (2019) being certified Platinum in the US and the UK, a sold-out world tour and not to mention being the youngest woman to bag the ‘Big Four’ at the 60th Grammy Awards this year, it seems there’s no stopping her. Now, the 18-year-old singer has earned herself a spot among the greats by becoming the youngest person to write and record a Bond theme. That’s right, a Bond theme.
Adele, Gladys Knight, Shirley Bassey and Tina Turner have all looked down the barrel of Bond’s gun, even Madonna had a pop... but we don’t talk about that.
Eilish’s’ ‘No Time to Die’ is a subtle and poetic nod to previous Bond themes all the while sticking to her signature whispery style. Strong resemblances of Adele’s ‘Skyfall’ and Sam Smith’s ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ can be heard throughout with the more familiar Bond-like orchestration in the background all thanks to German composer Hans Zimmer (Pirates of the Caribbean). And with that note towards the Eilish-esque ending, she has shown her versatility as an artist, not only proving that she has the vocal ability but also the sheer bravery and commitment it takes to live up to such a mammoth task.
After fulfilling a life-long goal, what's next for Eilish?
Eilish is due to perform at The BRIT Awards next week, accompanied by Hans Zimmer and former Smiths guitarist, Johnny Marr. If you’re the kind of person who listens to music for the experience, you won’t want to miss that.
