With the full release of her debut album Petals For Armor drawing nearer, Hayley Williams has just released the first track from the second PFA EP. ‘Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris’ is a track from a feminist standpoint, using flowery metaphors to describe the ways in which people grow and express themselves. There is a strong representation of togetherness whilst staying committed to your own individuality, some very important things to remember in today's current climate. Vocally, there comes a point on this track where the soft-spoken lyrics turn into a bout of crackling rage, a nod towards the early 'emo' days of Paramore.
"Think of all the wilted women / Who crane their necks to reach a window / Ripping all their petals off / Just 'cause 'he loves me now, he loves me not'", she sings over steady percussions and a dark, bouncy bassline. "I myself was a wilted woman / Drowsy in a dark room / Forgot my roots / Now watch me bloom”, a poignant way to say 'F You' to all the men that once caused you pain, resulting in forgetting the woman you once were. With help from boygenius (Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus), this track definitely has the girl power that women everywhere are still searching for. In testing and trying times such as these, perhaps using Petals For Armor is the only way to get by.
