Film Recommendation of the Week: Honey Boy (2019)

Writer: Libby BriggsLibby Briggs

It might feel like years since the UK lockdown was announced, but to help you through these tough few weeks, we want to welcome you back with some more film recommendations to pass the time. This week, we’re taking a look at Alma Har’el’s (Bombay Beach) recent film, Honey Boy.

Written by Shia LaBeouf (Transformers), it’s a brutally honest retelling of his childhood in which he brilliantly stars as his own fame-hungry and mentally abusive father. Noah Jupe’s (A Quiet Place) performance as the young Otis is powerful and wise beyond its years, as is Lucas Hedges’s (Manchester By Sea) as the older version of the star. While one tries to mend his broken relationship with his father, the other is overcoming an alcohol addiction, but both actors play their roles with incredible emotional maturity.

Honey Boy is a slow-paced, emotional journey through one star’s personal life and a coming-of-age tale that will stay on your mind long after it’s over.
