BRITitude 2020

Writer: Adam EnglandAdam England

When we saw the nominations for the upcoming BRIT awards, we were disappointed with the lack of women present. So, we got to work and here is our answer to the pale, male and stale BRITs: the inaugural BRITitude awards.

British Solo Artist

FKA twigs

Of course, this category is gendered in the BRITs, and twigs was one of the nominees in the female section. However, we feel that she is definitely worthy of the accolade.

Runners-up: Little Simz | GIRLI

British Group

The Big Moon

Let's face it, five bands up for nomination and not a single woman amongst them wasn't great. Yes, D-Block Europe and Foals warranted inclusion but Coldplay? We're not convinced. Meanwhile, The Big Moon dropped their long-awaited second album, complete with stylistic change and new sounds.

Runners-up: Calva Louise | Anteros

Best New Artist

Arlo Parks

There's a few up-and-coming artists that we could have included here, but we think that Arlo Parks is gonna be huge. Still just 19-years-old, the bilingual singer-songwriter is making waves and dropped her second EP in December last year. Also contributing to fellow newcomers Easy Life's Junk Food release, she looks set for a bright future.

Runners-up: Joy Crookes | beabadoobee

British Album of the Year

Little Simz - Grey Area

The 25-year-old's breakthrough album, Grey Area hit all the right notes. Arriving to critical acclaim, and featuring everyone from Michael Kiwanuka to Little Dragon, it was one of the best rap albums of 2019.

Runners-up: FKA twigs - MAGDALENE | The Big Moon - Walking Like We Do

Song of the Year

Greentea Peng - 'Mr. Sun (miss da sun)'

When Greentea Peng dropped this as the lead single from her soon-to-follow EP RISING, its soulful R&B floored us. One of the best rising stars in the scene, the Londoner proved that that she's not just a one-EP wonder with this mellow number.

Runners-up: Gaffa Tape Sandy - 'Headlights' | Lauran Hibberd - 'Hoochie'

International Solo Artist

Billie Eilish

Can it really be anyone else? No matter your views on her music, her impact on the industry in 2019 was undeniable. She's transformed the pop landscape, and fully deserves the accolade.

Runners-up: Lizzo | Solange
