Film Recommendation of the Week: Fish Tank (2009)

Writer: Libby BriggsLibby Briggs

This week’s film recommendation is a gripping drama British drama directed by Andrea Arnold, creator of the Oscar-winning 2005 short film, Wasp. It’s a bleak, but powerful film about the struggles of an unfortunate and troubled teenager. Mia (Katie Jarvis) is only 15 when she finds herself fighting against the harsh realities of life. Not only is she failing school, incredibly close to being kicked out, but her mother (Kierston Wareing) neglects her and her younger sister in favour of a hedonistic lifestyle. When their mother introduces her new boyfriend, the seemingly charismatic and charming Connor (Michael Fassbender), her world is changed. Fish Tank is unsettling and often uncomfortable, but an incredibly raw and unforgettable experience.
